Area Stage Company's Strangelove Group performs a staged reading of this 1998 Pullitzer Prize Winner by American playwright Paula Vogel. The story follows the strained, sexual relationship between Li'l Bit and her aunt's husband, Uncle Peck, from her adolescence through her teenage years into college and beyond. Using the metaphor of driving, the play explores the ideas of control and manipulation.

The Area Stage Company is a professional company that speaks a language of passion; passion for its work and love for the idea of establishing an artistic legacy in our community. In addition to our reputation of producing award winning theatre, the Area Stage has also developed into a premier showcase for emerging artists.
In 1989, the AREA STAGE COMPANY began producing on Lincoln Road. It quickly became “"one of the most influential theatres in the region”" Sun Sentinel. It presented a mix of contemporary plays, developed new works and “"changed the perception and standards of what South Florida’s theatres can -and should- be."” Sun-Sentinel.
Founded under the artistic vision of John Rodaz, it enjoyed national recognition on ABC, CNN International and Telemundo. The production of RUM AND COKE was the inspiration for the June 12th, 1998 Edition of Nightline with Ted Kopel, becoming the only theatre company featured on the program. ASC was also featured as a destination spot by Travel and Leisure Magazine. After ten years of proven success, it had to close its doors due to escalating rents on Lincoln Road.
For the next eight years, working between venues and countries, the company explored new theatre initiatives, original works by Hispanic Playwrights, and the production of works in South America. In November of 2008, ASC moved into the beautiful Riviera Theatre, a dream come true for John and Maria Rodaz and their supporters. This new venue has provided the organization the opportunity to offer music and dance series, a professional theatre program, and the Conservatory Program.
Once again, ASC is receiving radio, internet, and newspaper accolades for its artistic contribution to this community; Christine Dolen, Miami Herald Critic wrote: “The family behind Area Stage (artistic director/designer John Rodaz, producer Maria Banda-Rodaz and their talented multitasking kids Rachel and Giancarlo) is doing work with the high artistic standards that were a hallmark of Area during its 10-year run on Lincoln Road. Relocated to the Riviera Theatre, 1560 S. Dixie Hwy. in Coral Gables, Area is impressing Spanish- and English-speaking audiences all over again...”
